misuraThree dumb but fun action movies I watched recently:
Fast & Furious 9: being a Responsible Adult Who Goes to Bed on Time, I watched this in two parts: the first part made me ship Jakob/Otto and dash off a quick ficlet (my first new ship of the year!) and then two days later I watched the second part and uh, oops?
Recommended if you've enjoyed the other F&F movies, though if you did, you've probably already seen this one.

Hitman: Best Hitman in the World (his official title, I'm pretty sure) gets burnt by his own (evil) organization while on a mission in Russia and also chased by an Interpol agent of moderate competence. Oddly enough, the first bit is what bothered me most in terms of plot holes: he's The Best. Why would you ever burn The Best Hitman in the World? Just have him kill people until your problem goes away!
Recommended if you'd like to see a bald Timothy Olyphant or enjoy hitmen who gets chased by admiring but determined Interpol agents.

The Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard: something-something EU! something-something trio of unlikely heroes to the rescue! My expectations for this one were very low, and it easily exceeded all of them by being 100% fun and also completely bonkers. Like the first movie (The Hitman's Bodyguard), this is set in some fantasy-ish EU, and a bad guy has hatched some plan to destroy the EU's information infrastructure by using a drill to hack an underwater network ... or something? Brock Rumlow shows up as an Interpol agent from Boston.
Recommended without reservations, though I do feel you need to have seen the first movie to enjoy this one.

Bookwise, I'm halfway through KJ Parker's The Escapement, the third book in The Engineer trilogy, which contains all sorts of things I never wanted to know about sieges and engineering and stuff (but I'm having fun anyway). Everyone is terrible (though some people try very hard not to be) and Love Destroys Everything, so basically the same central points as every other KJ Parker book, I think?

Date: 2023-03-02 06:37 am (UTC)Also, if I squint a lot, I kind of do appreciate that the first movie sliced in just a tiny bit of 'The International Criminal Court Is Kind of Important Actually', as opposed to the more usual 'Yay, the Disgraced Cop Was Right All Along!' or 'Yay, an Ex-Marine Takes it upon Himself to Save the World'.

It's been a decade since I watched this (and requested it for Yuletide, LOL), but that was, without a doubt, the movie's biggest selling point to me. Mike was clearly very impressed by 47's competence! 👀
